Lesya Ukrainka, one of the greatest figures in classical Ukrainian literature, was born on 25 February 1871. MTVA’s documentary celebrates the life and work of the poet on the 150th anniversary of her birth, presenting her to the viewers as a person who can be a role model for all but especially for women. Her poetry and personality had a great impact on the Ukrainian community in Hungary, especially if we consider that the granddaughter of Mykhaylo Drahomanov, the famous Ukrainian philosopher and Lesya Ukrainka’s beloved uncle, settled down and started a family in Hungary. In the film, a relative of Lesya’s living in Budapest talks about her family, and presents a valuable collection of folk songs she recently discovered in her mother’s estate—a collection closely linked to Lesya Ukrainka.
