Mykhailo was called a prodigy - he was fluent in French, German and English, knew ancient Greek and Latin and was fond of physics and mathematics. At the age of 17, Mykhailo lost his father and grandfather and at the age of 25, after the sudden death of his uncle Olexandr, he inherited the entire great sugar empire of the Tereshchenkos. After 1917 Mykhailo lost everything: his capital, land and possessions. But during the global financial crisis of the 1930s Tereshchenko confidently got back on his feet and earned the reputation of a very successful European banker. Mykhailo Tereshchenko died in Monte Carlo in 1956. „Circumstances that could have broken a person of lesser willpower became a means of achieving triumph for him” – „The Times” wrote about him. This documentary series tells the story of the glorious Tereshchenkos, a family of Ukrainian magnates and philanthropists, and presents the legacy the family has left behind - a great example of incredibly interesting but under-researched chapters of Ukrainian history.
